Back Self Assessment and Treatment Series: What is it and who should do it?

The Baldi Movement Group believes that everyone deserves an evaluation regardless of background and social class. That’s why we’re dedicated to creating simple to follow guides for self assessment and treatment for the most common orthopedic and spine problems people face. Since low back pain is the #1 orthopedic problem experienced by the general population (affecting 60-70% of the population throughout their lifetime according to the World Health Organization) the very first self assessment and treatment series is dedicated to your back.

Although these are titled as “Self Assessment” and “Self Treatment,” we highly recommend going through the series with a trusted family member or friend. Self evaluation and treatment is difficult even for trained clinicians due to self bias. Having someone else to verify you are completing everything correctly and following all the rules described in the series is invaluable.

What is it?

This self treatment model is based upon the McKenzie Method (also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment or MDT). The Baldi Movement Group does not represent the McKenzie Institute however Dr. Charles Baldi has been thoroughly trained in McKenzie evaluation and treatment through 96 hours of advanced education and has had enormous success improving people’s lives through implementing the McKenzie Method for his clients. This method is a movement based analysis of joints. It’s aim is to restore the movement and position of joints in order to maximize their function and allow people to reach their goals.

This series is not completely comprehensive of the McKenzie Method. Instead it attempts to break down the steps of an exam and treatment into small, easy to follow segments. It focuses on the best rules and steps to follow for the majority of the population. For a fully comprehensive evaluation and treatment please call or email to find out if guided treatment from a licensed professional is best for you.

Who Should Do It?

You SHOULD go through this series if:

-Your quality of life is suffering because of low back or referred pain from your back.

-You have goals which low back or referred problems are keeping you from achieving.

-You have been told that back injections or surgery are your only options and you are looking for an evidenced based, non invasive approach that clinically shows similar or better results than injections or surgery.

You should NOT go through this series if:

-Your goal is to be told the one or two magic exercises you need to do to get better. Blindly completing exercises without first learning the rules to find out if they are beneficial for you or not is dangerous. In addition, failure to follow the correct progression of exercises is also dangerous.

-You have underlying medical conditions which would cause a back assessment and treatment to be unsafe. Some examples include: uncontrolled high blood pressure, weight bearing precautions or movement precautions from a physician, fall risk, oxygen or breathing difficulty, and more.

*Prior to attempting self assessment or treatment you are held responsible for determining whether you have any medical or physical conditions which would prohibit you from going through a back range of motion and exercise assessment and treatment. If you are unsure you must seek professional medical advice to verify if taking part in this series is safe for you.*

*The content in this series is meant as guidance for a self assessment and treatment, however it should not be considered official medical advice.*
